This city in southern Albania is nicknamed the &#8220;Stone City&#8221;, and the name fits perfectly: slate roofs, fa\u00e7ades and cobbled lanes, everything here seems carved from the same rock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With its imposing citadel, Cold War tunnel, and the intertwined stories of a writer and a dictator, Gjirokast\u00ebr brings together a large part of Albania\u2019s history in a single city. The old town has been a <\/span><b>UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, alongside Berat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Its tower houses (<\/span><b>kulla<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) reflect the security concerns of the Ottoman era: solid stone construction, narrow openings and grey slate roofs that glisten in the rain. Its origins are thought to date back to the 12th century, but the structure we see today owes much to the changes made by Ali Pasha of Tepelena in the 19th century.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Inside its walls, you\u2019ll find a <\/span><b>Weapons Museum<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a clock tower and even the wreckage of an American military aircraft dating from the Cold War. The site also has a darker history: under King Zog and later Enver Hoxha\u2019s communist regime, part of the castle served as a prison for political opponents until the 1970s. The writer <\/span><b>Ismail Kadar\u00e9<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, who was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature several times, devoted part of his work to his hometown. On the other side of history, <\/span><b>Enver Hoxha<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, born here in 1908, ruled Albania with an iron fist from 1944 to 1985 as a communist dictator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Enver Hoxha&#8217;s childhood home, destroyed by fire in the 1960s and rebuilt in 1966, now houses the city&#8217;s <\/span><b>Ethnographic Museum<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, dedicated to traditional Albanian life in the 19th century. A striking shortcut through Albania&#8217;s 20th-century history, all condensed into a single address.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"tb-wysiwyg tb-block align-left background-light pattern-none variant-none tb-collapsible-margins\" id=\"wysiwyg-5\">\n    <div class=\"inner-block tb-fade-in tb-fade-in--subtle\">\n        <div class=\"tb-wysiwyg__inner\">\n            <div class=\"inner-block\">\n                                <div class=\"text-part wysiwyg\">\n                                                                    <h3>The Cold War tunnel and Ottoman bazaar<\/h3>                                        \t<div class=\"translation-block\"><p><b>The Cold War Tunnel<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Carved beneath the citadel, this 800-metre tunnel has 59 rooms designed to protect the Communist Party elite in the event of an attack. Now a museum, it offers a striking glimpse into the paranoia of Enver Hoxha\u2019s regime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Ottoman Bazaar<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <strong>Qafa e Pazarit<\/strong> district, meaning \u201cbazaar pass\u201d, developed as the city\u2019s population spilled beyond the citadel walls.
